I’m Andrea Centazzo, an Italian-American composer and conductor who has spent more than five decades exploring contemporary art. In the early 1970s I introduced a new concept of percussion playing and began forging a path to my own innovative compositional methods, applying them to film music and concert music. In the late 1970s I helped found the NY Downtown Music Scene, collaborating with John Zorn, Tom Cora, Eugene Chadbourne, Toshinori Kondo and others, documentation of which appears on many albums. In 1976 I established ICTUS Records, one of the first musician-operated labels, recording and performing with Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, Pierre Favre, Derek Bailey, John Zorn, Alvin Curran, Albert Mangelsdorff, Don Cherry, Marylin Crispell, Elliott Sharp, Andrew Cyrille and many more. I moved to Los Angeles in 1990 to devote myself to composition and film music. I have authored three operas, two symphonies and almost 600 compositions for all kinds of ensembles, plus award-winning video films. One of my recent projects, Tides of Gravity, has been presented in collaboration with Nobel Prize laureate Kip Thorne and produced by LIGO, Caltech and NASA. The Library of the University of Bologna at DAMS recently dedicated the Fondo e Archivio Andrea Centazzo, making my works accessible to students and scholars. Known worldwide as a pioneer in avant-garde and improvised music, I am also an accomplished classical and soundtrack composer, conductor and orchestrator.
