Two West-African women grapple with the harrowing shadows of their colonial past as a mystical pink ancestral spirit guide shadows their every step, offering both guidance and torment.
Inspired by Sean Baker’s ‘Tangerine’ (2015) and shot entirely on an Apple iPhone 12 Pro, ‘MAGENTA: A Tale of Two Worlds’ is an ambitious yet simple tale that seeks to reclaim the role of telling our own stories as Diasporic Africans. This project went on to win the ‘Best Experimental Film’ Award at the 2023 Ivy Film Festival. In the haunting metropolis of Lagos, two West African women grapple with the aftermath of their return home. As they confront the shadows of their colonial past, the film unravels the mental and spiritual descent of the protagonists, plunging them into a surreal odyssey of addiction, psychosis, depression, and schizophrenia. A mystical pink ancestral Spirit Guide shadows their every step, offering guidance and torment. Amidst the chaos, the protagonists traverse the labyrinth of cultural confusion and disorientation, mirroring their internal struggles. The narrative reaches a fever pitch as the spirit guide propels them toward a climactic reckoning, leading to their ultimate spiritual alignment in an African-Futuristic realm, liberated from the shackles of colonial history.
The film is a result of an artistic collaboration between Angel Oduko and AMKMQ, with Oduko noting: ‘MAGENTA is an absurdist art film that delves into cultural identity, resilience, and the quest for freedom from historical shadows. In a homogenized Western world, post-colonial subjects grapple with remnants of traditional spirituality. MAGENTA conducts a genuine exploration of the modern by-products of colonialism on West African female mental health and spirituality. It prompts reflection on the potential mental and spiritual effects of the cultural disorientation resulting from colonization, considering its impact on our present-day mental, physical, and spiritual development. MAGENTA stands as an essential exploration of these intricate intersections, shedding light on the nuanced aftermath of colonial legacies.’
