    uniE608 Josh Brett
Fitness documentary Youtuber Josh Brett approached me some time ago to create some motion design and explainer animations for his channel. Josh’s work is largely a short form documentary about topics such as the shady world of supplements, how to sleep like an elite athlete, unrealistic body standards, that sort of thing. Quite interesting on all sides, no matter how much sport you do, or don’t do. So that’s where I came in to illustrate and animate key concepts in time with the voice over – show, don’t tell! One major project was creating close to 80 minutes of motion design to help illustrate and ultimately sell his Body Transformation Workshop, which was a project that lasted several months. The process was straight forward enough – use some guidelines such as colour palette, typeface and a few more to craft designs to hammer home the key points in the voice over. That involves a serious amount of cutting out hundreds of images in Photoshop, building some base or template compositions in After Effects to ensure visual consistency and minimise repetitive tasks. Layers were layered, markers were marked and expressions were expressionized into a collage of visual awesomeness. #explainer #motiongraphics #animation #aftereffects #infographics
uniE608 Shaun the Sheep Movie - trending montage
So this is was an interesting personal introduction to how stuff gets done At The Movies…. Bristol sure isn’t Hollywood, thankfully, and this was definitely the case with my involvement in a short motion graphics sequence in Aardman’s Golden Globe/Annie/BAFTA/OSCAR nominated* Shaun the Sheep feature film. Senior designer at Aardman, also an annual collaborator, creative gangster and guilty by association Gav Strange was involved in the film designing graphics for a blog, memes, tablet & phone screens, and a few other bits and bobs to look the part in the STS world and he suggested to the producers that I get involved to bring his still images to life. What I did: Motion graphics and some basic compositing for a montage sequence in the middle of the film, loosely based around sharing photos online, Instagram, Twitter, blogs, image searches, memes, social media frenzies, moral panics, onion terrors… that kind of thing. How I did it: After Effects and Mocha AE. Nothing fancy, just a healthy dollop of “Let’s get this done”, keyframes, indefatigable patience and constantly bashing my head off a brick wall trying to work out why colourspaces weren’t matching up and how to correct it – we ended up rendering out mattes for the graphics and those fine folks in Technicolour grading it accordingly, happy days at last. Animation? No probs. It goes without saying that the motion graphics here are pretty low key and uncomplicated, in keeping with the STS style – initially we were thinking to throw in all manner of super high-tech AE craziness, which would’ve put Iron Man style HUD’s and Minority Report holographic computer interfaces to shame, but we quickly worked out that would’ve looked ludicrous by comparison to the STS aesthetic… Tracking wasn’t easy, down to a lack of tracking markers (grumblegrumble), followed by a reshoot for a couple of shots (cue John McEnroe-style anger), but not really that difficult, despite practically doing it frame by frame. However, knowing that both the entire film is created frame by frame and that fans of the film could easily watch this film a couple of hundred times or even that this will end up broadcast countless of times over Christmas in years to come was constantly running in the back of my head, which can lead to undue anxiety/World Cup winning goal celebrations. The film was done at 1998 x 1124, but considering Aardman shoot their stop-frame work with a DSLR, several images were huuuuuge and just right for doing the auld zoom-into-a-screen thing where you need more pixels to play with. #motiondesign #motiongraphics #animation #cinema #oscarnominated #aftereffects#
    uniE608 Das Rad ist rad!
Das Rad ist rad! “Rad” is German for bike, so simply put, the bike is rad… Derailleurs, not so much, they just look fugly to be honest. Sturmey 3 speeds FTW. This is just a little something I eventually developed after repeatedly saying to myself “Yeah, that bike is rad!” Or “That’s rad, that Rad – as our friends in Berlin might say (or probably not) when I’d see a sleek hub-geared porteur, cafe racer or town bike. None of that MB racer hybrid lurid overcooked ugliness – pass the vomit bucket please. Stick a stylish rack on the front, strap your bag to it and off you go. Fast, yet mellow. Redshift though, holy shitting hell. Still got a fuckton more to learn, it’s a sprawling beast of a render engine. Saying that, narrow depth of field shots are suddenly so quick and easy to render, I love it. It reminds me of when I got a DSLR & a 50mm prime lens in 2010 and everything I shot for the next year was with a narrow DoF…. Aaaaaand, if you throw a bokeh image into the camera, it helps with creating a soft chromatic abberration in the lens blur of the final image. #motiondesign #redshift3d #cinema4d #motiongraphics #3danimation #c4d
    uniE608 Blue Monday
This was an experiment to link several sound effectors together to drive the animation in 3D. Basically, to get the animation controlled by the sound, which is TOTALLY FUCK1NG BANGING!!11 So, Blue Monday is roundly said to be that one miserable Monday, 2-3 weeks into January where the weather is shit, pay day is still 2 weeks away, and, well, it’s January. It’s shit. No two ways to say it. Saying that, the Blue Monday I far prefer is that banging tune by New Order from 1983, subject to a re-release in 1988 and again with a savage remix by acid techno overlords Hardfloor in 1995. So taking the rear cover of Power Corruption and Lies as a starting point, I modelled up a 3D version of the logo/design, putting it into a cloner and fracture objects to get using some of that mograph awesomeness and then used Redshift for the materials and rendering. I animated the 3D version using the basslines, mids and trebles to feed into the sound effector to make things move and whatnot, which was so god damn satisfiying to see the audio do the hard work for me, for once… #motiondesign #3danimation #redshift3d #cinema4d #c4d #soundeffector #visualisation
    uniE608 Where Love Lives
Definitely one of the all-time greatest house classics which has aged like a fine wine and still fills dancefloors 30 years later with the dopest piano breaks and strongest karaoke lyrics, courtesy of singer Alison Limerick, house maestros Frankie Knuckles and David Morales and songwriter Lars Kronlund. I used some foam rubber to make the piano keys and body parts, put them on an ink pad and pressed them into some paper to make a rough shape. Then I scanned them, rearranged in PS and imported to After Effects to animate them with a hefty influence from the opener of Catch Me If You Can. Saxophones, violins and heart particles came months later via Illustrator and After Effects, coupled with some of the dopest textures imaginable via True Grit. Crank it up, play it load and get on the acid house karaoke roundabout. #motiongraphics #motiondesign #bluenote #acidhouse #catchmeifyoucan #wherelovelives #musicvideo
