Constance Willems is a Dutch designer, artistic researcher, and writer working at the intersection of history, material culture, and monumental knitting. Her practice transforms knitting into a sculptural and investigative medium through which cultural memory, heritage, and historical narratives are materially constructed.
Grounded in extensive archival research and a cross-disciplinary methodology, Willems develops large-scale knitted structures that function simultaneously as architecture, narrative systems, and spatial interventions. In her work, thread becomes structure, and pattern becomes historiography.
Rather than approaching knitting as textile, she repositions it as a conceptual and structural language — capable of carrying complex historical content, genealogical systems, and cultural identities. Her projects often emerge from deep historical inquiry, translating overlooked or fragmented histories into tangible, immersive forms.
Alongside her visual practice, Willems has written six books in Dutch, German, and English, further extending her research into narrative and historical discourse. Her work operates between material precision and poetic interpretation, creating a distinctive field in which knitting becomes both method and meaning.
