Francisco Lacerda, born in the United States in 1990, is a Luso-American filmmaker who has gained recognition through his short films made in the autonomous region of the Azores. His notable works include “Dentes e Garras!” (2014), “Freelancer” (2017), “Karaoke Night” (2019), and “Cemitério Vermelho” (2022). His films have been featured in prestigious festivals such as the Slamdance Film Festival, IndieLisboa, Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, Beyond Fest, and MOTELX, among others.
Lacerda is credited with developing a unique subgenre in Portuguese cinema known as “Azoresploitation.” This fantastical film movement emerged from his short films and has come to define genre cinema created by Azorean filmmakers in the Azores, focusing on exploring
Azorean culture and particularities in a way that breaks or challenges traditional Portuguese cinema conventions. It has been further explored by other Azorean filmmakers such as Diogo Lima in “Os Últimos Dias de Manuel Raposo” and David Pinheiro Vicente in “O
Cordeiro de Deus.” The term “Azoresploitation” has been gaining increasing prominence as his works continue to captivate audiences in the festival circuit.
