JCB Architects — A Responsive Brand for Context-Driven Architecture

    [![JCB Architects branding](https://www.twine.net/signin

Jackson Clements Burrows are one of Australia’s most respected architecture practices, known for buildings that respond intelligently to place, light and context. The brief was an identity that behaves the same way.

Working at Pidgeon Ward, I contributed the logomark and much of the visual system — built on vertical rhythm and subtle shifts that echo how JCB handle structure and space. The language extends across signage, business collateral, publication design and a custom website that changes its imagery with the time of day. Every touchpoint was made to hold the practice’s attention to material and spatial nuance.

Awarded AGDA Merit (Branding — Small Business), 2019.

Swivel — A Digital Tool for Better Posture

Swivel is a virtual ergonomic assistant — a digital tool that improves posture and reduces workplace injury through timely, friendly nudges rather than nagging.

As co-founder and lead designer I owned the product UI, visual identity and supporting communication. Working from David Pidgeon’s logo, I built out the rest of the system: product design, onboarding flows, marketing collateral, illustration and animation — in Figma, alongside the development team, with usability and visual cohesion as the constant test.

Early users have responded to its calm tone and simplicity. Where most posture tools feel medical or rigid, Swivel is playful and optimistic, and the design system flexes across product, web and print as the product matures.

Dineamic — Packaging That Puts Nutrition Front and Centre

Dineamic set out to disrupt the ready-meal category on real ingredients and honest nutrition — a claim the category’s packaging conventions actively work against.

Working with Pidgeon Ward, we built a packaging system and brand language around a reinterpretation of the nutrition plate, used as both graphic device and an intuitive way to read product information at a glance. Ingredient lists and nutritional breakdowns, usually relegated to fine print, were given prominence — turning the brand’s point of difference into the design itself.

The result holds shelf presence in the grocery aisle while earning trust through clarity rather than claims.

    Awarded AGDA Merit (Packaging), 2014.

Rialto — Seamless Wayfinding for a Landmark Redevelopment

The Rialto precinct redevelopment — led by Woods Bagot for the Grollo Group — needed a wayfinding system that could hold its own against the architecture rather than sit on top of it.

At Pidgeon Ward I worked on a signage and digital directory suite that combined navigational clarity with material refinement. Freestanding digital totems, integrated identification signage, laser-cut panels, brass inlays and illuminated glass flutes were all considered against the building’s finishes and heritage. The digital interface prioritised accessibility and ease of use, so the whole system supports movement through the site while feeling inherently part of it.

Base — A No-Nonsense Rebrand for Everyday Plumbing

Base is a Reece-owned product line used daily by plumbers across Australia. The product was trusted; the branding wasn’t — clients read it as cheap, which undercut the plumbers recommending it.

The task was to raise perceived quality without crowding Reece’s premium range. Working at Trout, we stripped it back: bold typography, direct messaging, a utilitarian aesthetic that reads clean and honest rather than budget. It had to work within tight constraints — existing product photography, minimal marketing support — so the system does the heavy lifting through type and structure alone.

The result is a brand plumbers are comfortable putting in front of a client.

On Group — A Bright Brand for People Potential

On Group is a consultancy that unlocks the potential of people inside small-to-medium businesses — team development, engagement, culture change. The category is full of jargon, so the brand had to communicate without it.

The rebrand, created at Trout, centres on a toggle graphic in the logomark: a simple symbol of activation and transformation. That device extends into a system of playful icons and illustrations, anchored by a vibrant palette and warm, confident typography. The result is clever and approachable — a flexible visual toolkit that lets On Group explain what they do through imagery rather than buzzwords.

Laddr — Building a Brand for Trade-Focused Finance

Laddr is a lending platform from Reece Group built for the financial realities of trade businesses. The brief was a brand that felt approachable and reliable without falling into the usual financial-services clichés.

Working with the team at Trout, I helped deliver an identity that’s direct, grounded and flexible — logo design, visual language, typography and a range of supporting collateral for both digital and in-branch use. It now runs across signage, POS, online and internal communications.

The result is a straight-talking brand that reflects the work ethic of the people it serves.

Reece Diary 2025 — Capturing the Ritual of the Early Start

The Reece diary is a thirty-year tradition — an annual thank you to customers that has to earn its place rather than read as merchandise.

For the 2025 edition the concept centred on the emotional rhythm of the early morning: rising mist, warm light, shared moments before the day starts. Working with photographer Thom Rigney, I art directed a controlled indoor shoot that held that atmosphere consistently across four variations, one for each business unit — plumbing, HVAC, civil and refrigeration.

The result is cinematic and personal at once. Each version speaks directly to its trade, which turns a giveaway into a moment of recognition from a brand that understands the people it serves.

Skemah — Packaging a New Kind of Garden Edge

Skemah is a modular garden edging system built to combine function with visual simplicity. The packaging had to communicate strength and utility to the trade while still appealing to homeowners and designers — two audiences that usually want opposite things from a landscaping product.

At Pidgeon Ward we developed a system that foregrounds product clarity: clean lines, structured typography and an architectural tone of voice. It positions Skemah as a practical tool with a refined presence, bridging trade product and lifestyle design.

Bldg.Eng — A Dryly Festive Wrap for Christmas Gifting

Each year Bldg.Eng sends a seasonal gift to clients that has to sound like them — considered, exacting, quietly playful. The corporate Christmas gesture is a genre with very little room to move.

For the 2014 edition we developed a printed card and wine wrap at Pidgeon Ward that borrowed the visual language of project scheduling and applied it to end-of-year festivities. Typography, minimal graphic cues and a wry tone did the work: firmly on-brand, and still worth a smile.
