Bringing years of experience and fluency, Rachel Austin's aim is to cultivate playfulness in both her music and absurdist theatrical work. Calling to mind comparisons with Nick Cave’s restless creative spirit, she rarely comes from the obvious perspective, by turns cajoling her way into the heart. Austin is an electronic composer, songwriter, and singer and has toured and recorded throughout Europe and North America. From folk opera to anti-corporate immigrant improvised punk (Rachel Discrimination), she plays with her vocal tone to create wonky, left-of-centre songs in live performances. Her absurdist theatrical performances jab at deeper issues of white female identity (Bad Light), obsessions with power (Entra, Silvio!, Rags to Riches), and celebrating histories of avant garde music makers (QUBe, ikon). Austin has performed with Kronos Quartet, David Thomson, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, gabby fluke-mogul, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Molissa Fenley, Crow Nishimura and Joshua Kohl, Alvin Curran, Dohee Lee, and many others.
