When I joined the University’s AI Hackathon and witnessed how AI agents could actually speed up research workflows, I knew this was the kind of work I wanted to keep building on. That’s why I’m applying for the AI Engineer position because it feels like the best next step in the path I’ve been carving out. I’m pursuing my Master’s in Artificial Intelligence here at UoA, building on my diverse and international education and experience. What drives me is simple: I want to build AI systems that don’t just live in theory but actually make research and innovation faster and more impactful. This internship is exactly the kind of space where I can put that into action. So far in my master’s, I’ve immensely enjoyed the chance to test this passion in real world projects. During my previous internship at a biotech startup, I developed machine learning models to pull meaningful insights from complex healthcare data. That experience showed me how much AI can contribute when theory meets application. At the University’s AI Hackathon, I helped build an AI-powered assistant on IBM Watsonx.ai to pre-screen Animal Ethics applications. I implemented a RAG pipeline with a custom vector index of regulatory documents, reaching over 90 percent recall. Our proof of concept ran through 100 consecutive queries without a single failure. The result? An AI agent that was reliable, practical, and made reviewers’ lives easier. I’m currently working on a semester project developing a 3D U-Net for automatic hippocampal segmentation from MRI scans for early Alzheimer’s detection. As much as I love diving deep into the technical work this entails from fine-tuning to model deployment, I also love the challenge of making our results meaningful for non-technical audiences. For me, the excitement is in building AI tools that people can actually use.…
