My name is Isabel Doherty and I make illustrations that make kids' eyes light up and stories come alive! I'm based in Co. Kildare, Ireland and have been studying illustration at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin for three years. My style is a blend of realism and abstract, often capturing the quiet moments in life and portraying feelings that can’t be visualised. I love both digital and analogue art, in particular painting, and I’ve always believed they can work hand in hand and come together to create something special. Some highlights from my journey: -As a volunteer illustrator at the Fighting Words Workshop, I love seeing children connect with the worlds I help create! I help bring their imagination to life by drawing their stories written in the class, which is printed in a booklet at the end for them to take home. Due to the short amount of time to make these illustrations, I have learned to draw under pressure and a time limit while not letting it affect the standards of the drawings. -I was commissioned for two illustrations as part of a Fighting Words project, which were recently presented on park benches in Mary Lavin Place in Dublin and will be on display for a year. -My mural design for a room in the Barnardos Headquarters was recently confirmed and is due to be painted this summer. Why we might be a good match!: -My experience in Fighting Words has helped me understand what resonates with young readers. -I have read many children's books, both when I was growing up and now, and I’ve always enjoyed studying the illustrations. I have a strong understanding of how book images and illustrations work around the text and vice versa. -I have experience using Procreate, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. -I have strong skills in drawing and painting (in particular acrylic, oil pastel, and watercolour), I'd love to hear more about your story and the little readers you're creating it for.
