The Anglo-Saxon period is shrouded in mystery, especially the language. It has been dubbed the 'Dark Ages' due to the very little information we have on the period, making it hard for historians to piece to together what went on during this time.
Documents and written manuscripts are hard to come by making the study of Anglo-Saxon English, the making of Old English, challenging to learn about. Our two main, contemporary, sources, Bede and Gildas, actually wrote looking back at the Anglo-Saxon period, both writing towards the end of the 1,000-year reign of this mysterious society, essentially acting as historians. There is another issue with these two scribes, they wrote their own versions of what happened during this time, making studying this period of English history that bit more difficult.
In this documentary, I uncover what the Anglo-Saxons sounded like, how they spoke, and sorted fact from fiction.
