paper LA CALLE ES NUESTRA - the power of art

LA CALLE ES NUESTRA — THE POWER OF ART is a short film about art inside the Chilean protest movement and how it was increasingly instrumentalized to channel a nationwide outrage that later transcended national territory by addressing societal conflicts of global relevance.

It all gained momentum in October 2019, when students started protesting in the streets of Santiago de Chile. Over the past decades, the country has become used to public outcry over specific issues. This time, however, local outrage against increased public transport fees quickly transformed into a nationwide movement pushing for fundamental and far-reaching reforms.

The student protests provided a platform for others to express accumulated discontent. People from various backgrounds began to organize themselves and loudly voice their resentment against inequalities at all systemic levels. Big questions about justice, distribution of resources and wealth as well as corruption and nepotism among political elites were soon brought to the street across the entire country.

"LA CALLE ES NUESTRA - the power of art“ explores the role of the art scene in the Chilean protest movement. It is an audiovisual journey full of creative energy and alternative protest culture, showing how art has been used to facilitate political action.
