I am Michaela J. R. Selway, a doctoral student in medieval history at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, funded by Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. My research blends archival work, oral history, and public history to illuminate voices often left out of traditional narratives. Beyond academia, I have contributed as a writer and editor to many different projects. I was the lead historical researcher on the Early Medical Women of New Zealand project, hosted the Tāhuhu Kōrero podcast, and worked as a proofreader and copyeditor. I enjoy making scholarly work accessible through public history projects, blogs, and podcasts.

paper Against the Odds: New Zealand’s First Women Doctors

Using oral history methods and archival research, this project tells the stories of the first women doctors to study and practice in Aotearoa, New Zealand. It focuses on those who graduated from New Zealand’s first Medical School in Otago from 1896 to 1967, before the second Medical School opened in Auckland.
In 2025, this project culminated in a monograph. I authored seven of the nine chapters and was lead-editor of the remaining two.
