Menelek Lumumba is an award-winning writer and director whose work interrogates the intersections of race, history, and identity through bold, character-driven storytelling. His debut feature film, 1 Angry Black Man, premiered to critical acclaim and won multiple festival awards for its incisive writing and fearless performances. Set over the course of one tense afternoon in a college classroom, the film explores the politics of literature, race, and privilege as seen through the eyes of a young Black student. The film has screened at numerous festivals across the country and is now available for rental on all major platforms, as well as streaming on Tubi. Lumumba’s success with 1 Angry Black Man helped propel his reputation as a daring new voice in American cinema. He is currently developing Southern Gentlemen, a gripping sports drama series, and Game Plan, a feature film exploring the pressures and politics of college football. (Omar Doresey is attached to star in both projects) He is also producing an audio documentary on the historic 1969 student lock-in at Morehouse College, in collaboration with iHeart Radio and Imagine Entertainment, with executive producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. A quarterfinalist for the prestigious Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, Lumumba also serves as a Film Faculty Associate and Professor of Screenwriting at Arizona State University. His passion for craft, culture, and community continues to drive his mission: to tell transformative stories that challenge, inspire, and endure.
