My name is Mushi and I am an artist / filmmaker located in San Francisco. My journey as a filmmaker began during the years I lived in Japan. I've always had an interest in narratives and moving images. Recognizing this, my community gifted my a camera and I started to teach myself how to use it. With my background in Anthropology, I've always had a thirst for culture and learning. In my setting in Japan, I was surrounded by many artists of different mediums. Japan being a homogenous country, I quickly saw that many conceptual artists around me were misunderstood by society. This sparked my attention and I began creating a bi-lingual documentary series as an attempt to have artists narratives be understood and appreciated. This was a big learning curve and challenge on my part as I self taught myself to film, edit, and sound engineer. This series ended up winning an award at the Milan Expo 2015 and subsequently, I moved more towards film taking on serious film jobs in Korea making, producing, and editing a documentary and a feature length film that was shown in cinemas in film festivals around the world. After my filming journey in Korea, I moved more in the direction of the subjects I was filming, art. I then took the journey of becoming an artist and delving deeper into the art world, galleries, and museums. I developed my own voice and narrative which was another major learning lesson in my life to work towards an undefined goal and concept. On top of that, interacting in the art world in fairs, galleries, and museums gave me access to perspectives I haven't encountered yet and as an active member in the art world, I was able to pursue opportunities in world renowned institutions, galleries, and fairs. Since the beginning of 2022, I've decided to move back towards film again. I was able to incorporate much of my film skills in my art practice and I want to bring all the experiences I've had with art into my role as a filmmaker. It is my journey now to bring together my background and life experiences into this repertoire, from being born in Korea, growing up in London, and living in multiple places around the world has contributed to my current vision and style. Please feel free to get in touch for any questions or information.

uniE608 Artist Documentary - Katie Murken
This is a recent documentary I finished for an artist on commission. Filming artists requires can be nerve-wracking for the artist in an intimate environment so I make these in a 1-crew style with myself being the interviewer, directing, and editing. #videoeditor #video #filmdirector
