Hi, I’m Neil S. Serven, a language specialist, lexicographer, and writer with extensive experience in dictionary development, content creation, and QA for AI/LLM contexts. I’ve contributed to Merriam-Webster’s major dictionary projects and collaborated with Cambridge University Press as a freelance lexicographer. Much of my work involved researching collocations, idioms, and similar language habits that are natural to the human ear but not always easy to isolate and define. I enjoy shaping accurate, accessible language resources and leading teams to high-quality outputs. In my most recent job I led quality assurance and training efforts at Innodata, specializing in training AI models, evaluating AI-generated content and imagery, and creating analytics-driven improvement plans. I trained LLM datasets as a vendor for a top-five tech client. I became very familiar with the work of modeling and evaluating responses to search queries with an eye toward helpfulness, verifying the accuracy and freshness of claims, tailoring a response to meet a user’s intent and location, and flagging the presence of harm or PII. In other projects I evaluated AI-generated summaries of social media posts and the relevance and engagement of bot-suggested comments. I managed a text-generation project that involved assessing the fidelity of a generated image to the constraints of a user prompt and the insertion of a text overlay without distorting the original image. In addition to my professional work, I am an established writer with stories and essays in over 30 publications, and I cherish any opportunity to explore what language can achieve as a human invention that bridges gaps between entities.
