Nelson Brandt is a German musician, singer, and producer based in Berlin.
He is known for his distinctive style, blending genres such as jazz, pop, and indie. His music is an interplay of alluring melodies and dry grooves that often only start to feel like home after repeated listening. Brandt resists trends without losing touch with the spirit of the times.
Through his parents’ love of jazz, funk, and hip-hop, he was introduced at an early age to artists such as Roy Ayers, Jamiroquai, Madlib, and Slum Village, which strongly shaped his musical style.
At the age of 10, Brandt began creating his own music on the PlayStation, and after receiving a bass guitar as a gift from his father, he embarked on his musical journey around 2009.
Over time, he taught himself more and more about the world of music production and has since released a wide range of albums under his artist name „Knowsum“, including the singer-songwriter album Cosmic Breeze, the pure hip-hop instrumental album Knowsum’s Fantastic Loop Machine, a more experimental LP titled Play God and Shit Happens, as well as numerous digital beat EPs. He was also part of the legendary German instrumental series Hi-Hat-Club on Melting Pot Music.
Additionally Brandt composed soundtracks for shortfilms of visual artists such as Christian Komaromi („Spores“ & „Driftwood“) and Julia Mueller („Bog Day“)
On the occasion of commemorating Albert Mangelsdorff in 2025, he produced an album reinterpreting historical recordings by Mangelsdorff in coorporation with the city of Frankfurt a.M.
