Singer-songwriter Nick Whitehorn was born and raised in the biggest council estate in Europe, Wythenshawe, in Manchester, England, in December 1987. Nick started learning the guitar at the age of around fourteen strumming and singing along to Nirvana and Oasis songs, like thousands of others, to teach himself the basics.
At sixteen, Nick then went off to college to study Music and formed his first band, “Grand Canyon”. They regularly played concerts around the Manchester circuit for around four years but eventually went their separate ways after finishing university - which has led to a new creative lease of life for Nick, allowing him to develop his own distinctive style. During his time in college he was taught by James guitarist Larry Gott who was a big fan of Nick’s guitar playing and stand-out song-writing skills.
In terms of influences, Nick cites his musical inspirations to be Johnny Marr, Joni Mitchell, Life, Jeff Buckley and Moby. He also thinks electro DJs Daft Punk and Trentemoller are “pure class”.
The first gig Nick ever went to was a Feeder concert at Manchester Apollo aged thirteen, where his Uncle managed to get free tickets from working for a tabloid newspaper. This is what made Nick decide to pursue a career in Music.
Nick is making his mark by playing regular open mic nights across Manchester, gradually spreading his reputation and expanding the reach of his music. He contributed a performance to Children In Need for the BBC Mediacity having passed an audition. He also has a 5 track E.P available online called “The Guess Who E.P” which was released in 2012. Nick is beginning to record his second E.P in the new year.
