Hello, I’m Phil Baker, a composer and author based in Seaford. I studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and completed an M.A. and an M.Phil. in Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London, along with LTCL (Piano) and an Advanced Diploma from the Kodály Academy. I am a PRS member. My principal achievements include commissions for Gulliver (1986) and its revised form Gulliver: a Space Odyssey, the one-act opera The Pardoner’s Tale (2007) for the Herstmonceux Medieval Festival, Six Cabaret Songs for Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan (2021), and the two-act opera Bayeux (2018). My works span opera, solo and chamber music, and orchestral pieces, with performances across the UK and collaborations with community arts and advanced student productions. In addition, and relevant to this post, I have published analyses on a range of music from early jazz to contemporary concert music, published by ZigZagPublications, Bristol. The relevant is that analysis involves making musical judgements and assessments by being able to show the structure and qualities of any given work.
