Reporter at USA Today Network
January 1, 2006 - January 1, 2021Covering the arts beat meant everything from Broadway reviews and interviews to covering high school musicals the way most newspapers cover high school sports: wall to wall.
Assistant Managing Editor/Features at USA Today Network
December 31, 1999 - December 31, 2005Leading a team of critics, writers and designers to create a weekly entertainment tabloid and a biannual glossy magazine about NYC.
Storytelling Reporter at USA Today Network
December 31, 2020 - September 11, 2025Telling New York’s most-compelling stories, from Buffalo after the
Tops massacre to human-interest features told with heart. Sometimes,
this meant short daily features off the news. Often, it meant long
investigations and award-winning, long-form journalism.
Education
B.A. Journalism at New Mexico State University
August 16, 1982 - May 19, 1986Qualifications
2024 National Headliner Award | Newspapers Special or Feature Column on One Subject
April 8, 2024 - April 8, 2024First Place for “20 Years Ago, a Girl Survived a Deadly Yonkers Fire. Her Story Has Gone Untold Until Now”
Judges’ comments: Peter Kramer of the Journal News (lohud.com) is the next Jimmy Breslin. His column on the Yonkers fire in 2003 that burned a Nodine Hill block to ash is as vibrant and alive as if we are witnessing the disaster. Feature writing at its best.
2022 Best Feature Writing Portfolio from the Society for Feature Journalism
July 1, 2022 - July 1, 2022Judge’s comments: “Peter’s entry stood out for two reasons: His story on the aftermath of the Buffalo supermarket massacre was the best single piece in this category, and the range he demonstrated as a writer with his months-long dive into the reshaping of the Rockettes. The former showed what a thoughtful reporter can do to craft a sensitive feature in short order; the latter, while possibly ultimately too much of a good thing, was a great example of weaving numerous characters and their story lines into a compelling read.”
2022 Best of Gannett Award | Audio Storytelling
June 1, 2022 - June 1, 2022For “New Light: The Life, Death and Reopened Case of Karen Mason.” When colleagues Jon Campbell and Georgie Silvarole left for jobs elsewhere, it fell to me to bring this five-part cold-case serial home. The narrative follows the events leading to a young teacher's mysterious, unsolved 1988 death. I recorded each episode of the story with the help of sound engineer Peter Carr and the help of radio veteran Matthew Leonard. The judges said: “A gripping listen that reels you in with every detail.”
2023 Distinguished Beat Reporting Award for Excellence from New York News Publishers
May 1, 2024 - May 1, 2024With colleague Steve Lieberman, for the story, "At Jared Lloyd's Spring Valley firehouse, a plea deal in his death hits hard."

2023 Distinguished Feature Writing Award for Excellence from New York News Publishers
May 1, 2024 - May 1, 2024For "20 years ago, a girl survived a deadly Yonkers fire. Her story has gone untold until now," a long-form narrative on what happened to little Vaniya Velez, the girl who lived. https://www.lohud.com/in-depth/news/local/westchester/yonkers/2023/03/07/revisiting-the-2003-yonkers-fire-on-nodine-hill-20-years-later/69823115007/
