Mandela Washington Fellowship (U.S. State Department)
August 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023
This fellowship became one of the most meaningful and deeply fulfilling experiences of my life, both professionally and personally. I had the great fortune to be chosen for this cultural exchange and series of storytelling workshops with artists, students and activists in Harare, Zimbabwe. My role was to lead the filmmaking elements of our storytelling workshops in conjunction with a small team of fellows. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also produced and filmed a short documentary together with local performance artist Tafadzwa “TafBob” Mutumbi, Founder and Artistic Director of the Chenura Trust. This intimate portrayal follows TafBob and his cast mates from rehearsals to opening night of their play "Vatengesi" a raw and deeply personal meditation on political oppression, state-sanctioned violence, terror, loss and grief. The film explores the extreme pressures (including death threats) these brave artists face, and the difficult choices they must make on the cusp of Zimbabwe’s 2023 national elections.
