M.C Cruz Issaoui is a child of Chilean immigrants turned nomadic artist and filmmaker. They are currently based in Toronto but also lived two years in Chile and completed an Artist Residency in Morocco. They attended Etobicoke School of Arts and majored in Visual Arts before moving to Vancouver to study film at Capilano University. Their animation journey began at Sketch Working Arts at stop motion workshops sponsored by TIFF Bell Lightbox and TAIS. They realized they were very capable of animating any object and that they enjoyed the process. That began a career of animating for non profit organizations, private clients as well as creating independent films. Their animated film “Root Causes” screened at OCAD in a special preview and Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival with a filmmakers panel invite. In 2021 they were awarded a 15,000 dollar grant from the ISO Solidarity Fund to research and write a screenplay. In 2022 they worked with the Accessible Writers Lab to hopefully create more access into the film and TV industry for writers who are disabled and otherwise marginalized in Canadian society. Most recently they created animated sequences for the CBC funded pitch trailer “A Walk in Her Shoes”. Recently their animated short films have screened at a Nuit Blanche event by the Millennial X Program, Tokyo Lift Off Film Festival, Icona Animation Festival amongst others. Their most recent animation creation “Gripping Whisper Sahara” will screen and compete at Anijam Competition as part of the TAIS Showcase 2024. M.C Cruz Issaoui aims to create unique films that challenge the status quo while being visually and narratively compelling.
