Reproducing the Bayeux Tapestry over Three Centuries: A Case Study in the Printed Reproduction of a Work of Art (London: Printing Historical Society, 2024) examines how printing methods from the 18th to 21st centuries shaped the visual representation of the Bayeux Tapestry. Originally developed during the pandemic, the project required extensive refinement, from resolving typographic inconsistencies and completing the index to curating 120 comparative images. The redesigned hardback features a jacketed cover with carefully selected typefaces and a refined typographic system, while the dust jacket presents a striking sequence of major reproductions of the same tapestry section, visually charting how print technologies and interpretation have evolved across three centuries.
Brief:
This project involved designing a magazine focused on visual culture, featuring an editor’s note, contents page, three articles, and a listings section. Three alternative covers were created to test the versatility of the visual identity.
Target Audience:
The magazine targets a broad audience, including 1950s-era individuals, scholars of mid-century and atomic-age culture, and creatives inspired by retro-futurism.
Solution:
Atomus is crafted to celebrate the retro-futurist aesthetics of the mid-twentieth century, capturing the complex blend of hope and apprehension that defined the Atomic Age. Our mission is to serve as a wellspring of inspiration for artists, designers, and writers, while also preserving mid-century futuristic cultural heritage for enthusiasts and academics alike. Each issue will feature exclusive collectable stickers and posters, making Atomus a unique keepsake for those passionate about the era’s visionary style.
