Hello, I’m Emma Franz, an award-winning filmmaker who has worked across the business and creative sides of film and television. I have produced, directed, written, lensed and edited feature documentaries that Netflix and Amazon Prime licensed, and that were commissioned by ABC Australia, NHK Japan, LinkTV USA, YLE Finland, TV Catalunya Spain, and SKY Italia. I’ve managed co-productions with the USA, Japan, and Finland. My films have won awards at major festivals on six continents and have had theatrical releases in Australia, the USA and South Korea. I’ve received numerous grants and fellowships from Screen Australia, the Australian Film Commission, Film Victoria, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, ScreenWest, Arts Victoria, the Australia-Korea Foundation, Creative Australia and Creative Partnerships Australia, as well as corporate and philanthropic sponsors. I’ve spoken at venues including the Smithsonian, Lincoln Center and the Museum of the Moving Image, and in 2017 I was invited to be artist-in-residence at Maison Dora Maar. In 2022-23 I was selected for the European Women’s Audiovisual Association Producer Program, mentored by Ada Solomon and Madeleine Ekman. Before filmmaking I was a professional jazz singer and musician, and in 2023-24 I served as the Business Development Manager for the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra.
