"Shooting the Moment" (Nikan Salari, 2024) exposed at the Localize Festival, Potsdam | 4:40 min | Music: Aly Ostovar A multichannel video installation exploring the relationship between Artificial Intelligence, photography, tourism, and memory. Shooting the Moment investigates how AI reshapes the act of capturing images, reflecting on the aggressive metaphors embedded in photographic language—to capture and to shoot—and how these actions can “kill” a moment while simultaneously transforming it into memory. Drawing inspiration from Susan Sontag’s reflections on photography as a form of possession and symbolic violence, the installation questions what it means to record, own, and edit memories in an age where images can be generated, manipulated, and reproduced by machines.

The film follows Misha, a 28-year-old Australian-born woman of exiled Iranian parents, whose involvement in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement reflects her hope of one day returning to her motherland. Through intimate storytelling and visual documentary language, the project captures the emotional weight of inherited exile and the power of advocacy for women's rights in Iran.

Through an intimate character study, the film explores memory, resilience, and the invisible burden carried by those who have survived forced migration.

"Trapped Souls, Possessed Bodies" (Nikan Salari, 2022) Sound & Music: Alireza Ostovar | Cinematography: Nikan Salari & Valentina de Wolff Presented as part of a site-specific film group exhibition, this installation explores the relationship between sculptural form and cinematic movement. Through arts-based research into European sculptural heritage and the history of cinematic representation, the work investigates how sculptures oscillate between stillness and presence—silent witnesses that appear frozen in time yet resonate with traces of human experience. By placing film in dialogue with sculpture, the installation transforms statues from objects of passive admiration into active agents of perception, allowing them to emerge as characters rather than artefacts.
