I was born in the Mississippi Delta, but my parents moved us to Chicago when I was two years old. I played bugle in high school, and later played trumpet. I studied trumpet with Mr. Bill Babcock of The Boston and Chicago Symphony while taking music education classes at Sherwood Music Conservatory in Chicago.
In a short time, I was hanging out and playing in blues and jazz clubs, which lead to recording for an unknown R&B singer, Tyrone Davis. Little Richard was in Chicago and needed a trumpet player, so I said yes. This was my first road gig. I saw Washington, DC and NYC for the first time with his band. We played the Apollo and I was so impressed with NYC, I moved there.
