I was born in Damascus in 1981 and grew up in a female-led artist family, shaped by my grandmother, a painter and writer, and my mother, a journalist and actress, who have long engaged with societal topics. From early childhood I was immersed in emancipatory discussions about religion, politics, art, and women’s rights. I started acting on Syrian television at age nine and went on to participate in numerous cinema productions in Syria and abroad. I completed my acting training at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus, drawing inspiration from diverse theatre traditions, before turning more towards comedy as a form of political critique and resistance. During the war I explored different languages and forms of comedy, staging my first stand-up performance in Damascus in 2014 and establishing a genre previously non-existent in Syria. After fleeing the conflict, I continued my work in Austria, developing an idiosyncratic and global language that preserves the polemics and poetics of Arabic in English, turning absurdities into material. I am currently developing a multi-part theatre project I’m Crocodiled with Theater Spektakel, teaching in the Schalom und Salam – Szenen des Friedens educational project, and playing a main role in the Austrian film Die Reise (AT 2026, directed by Sallar Othman).
