Hello, I'm Lai Gates—a musician and educator with over 30 years of teaching and performing in the Valley. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance and Music Composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China in 1992, and later completed my Master of Arts in Piano Collaboration and Music Composition at Arizona State University in 2010. I hold an Arizona Department of Education Teaching Certificate and an Arizona Substitute Certificate, along with certifications from The WellPrepared Pianist Institute and the Yamaha Group Teaching Institute. My work spans performance, teaching, and composition across multiple musical disciplines. As a traditional Pipa virtuoso, I performed as a soloist with the Chandler Symphony Orchestra in 2010. I actively perform and organize chamber music events and teach a wide range of instruments, including Piano, Organ, Pipa, Guitar, Violin, Viola, and Cello, as well as Vocal, Choir, Orchestra, and Band coaching. I have served on the music faculties of Arizona Christian University, Phoenix College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, and Heritage Academy, providing instruction in instrumental and vocal performance, masterclasses, juries, recitals, and ensemble coaching. Since 2007, I have been the pianist and choir accompanist for Esperanza Lutheran Church, supporting all Sunday services and musical programs.
