Work Experience

Travel Journalist-Photographer & Writer at Kerrick James Photography
January 1, 1990 - Present
Projects are my life. I've worked full-time as a photographer since 1990, for a wide variety of magazines and book publishers, also shooting for travel destinations, CVB's and DMO's. Since 2005 I've taught near 130 photo workshops, from Arizona to Alaska, New Zealand to Patagonia, Venice to Churchill and Zambia to Baja California.

Education

Bachelor of Fine Arts, Photography at Arizona State University
August 15, 1979 - May 15, 1982
I studied photography as an art media at ASU, after starting college in New Mexico on an earth sciences scholarship.

Qualifications

Photography Workshop Instructor
May 1, 2005 - August 1, 2026
From 2005 to 2023 I taught roughly 75 photo workshops for Arizona Highways, though out the American West, Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico. Since then I've led and taught close to 50 photo workshops under my own brand KJPhoto Safaris, around the world. These involve personal and group critiques, real-time instruction, and post-trip evaluations.

Industry Experience

Celebrate the Centennial of Route 66

I’ve photographed two books related to Route 66 (Backroads of Route 66, Ghost Towns of Route 66) and have taught five photo workshops on the Arizona portion of the Mother Road. I’ve written several short stories on Arizona’s piece as well. Here’s my most recent one:

Discover the Lost World of Lake Powell's Glen Canyon

As Lake Powell has diminished its status as the second largest reservoir in the USA, and a decades long drought continues, Glen Canyon is coming back to life. This feature for EastWestNewsService provides both historical and present day background as well as info to plan your personal visit. https://www.twine.net/signin

    Venice Carnival

I spent 17 days in February of 2026 covering the annual Venice Carnival, an astonishingly visual event draw, and a magnet for photographers and performance artists around the world. My story and images appeared online for EastWestNewsService in June, 2026. https://www.twine.net/signin
