My name is John Young. I'm a 67 year-old retired physician who was born, raised and worked in Toronto, Ontario, Canada until the arrival of Covid-19 in 2020 forced me to retire (I have chronic health issues that greatly increased the likelihood of a "poor outcome" if I were to become infected). I worked as a family doctor for the first years of practice, providing care to a patient population that was low income and had a high incidence of mental health and addiction issues; in part because of this reality, I began providing psychotherapy to patients who requested it. I gradually reduced my until I devoted all of my time -- and the remaining 30 years of my career -- to working as a psychotherapist, with a particular focus on past trauma and its consequences, including personality disorders and substance misuse. My work life was interrupted when in the early 2000s I became addicted to cocaine and crack, in itself a manifestation of early childhood sexual abuse, as well as brain damage suffered when I was hit by a car while I was in medical school. After four years and five treatment centres, I was able to stop using and will be celebrating 20 years of abstinence in January 2026. There is another part of me that has coexisted with the person I’ve described above: I have always been drawn to creative endeavors, starting with writing short stories when I was in elementary school and continuing through medical school, and beyond, in various formats, from personal to professional, haiku to textbooks, and comedy to tragedy. I've also edited the writings of others, produced and directed a documentary that was broadcast nationally; and written, directed and performed in theatre productions that required me to work with a last cast, many of whom were doctors with high opinions of themselves. As to what makes me stand out, perhaps that's a question best answered by others; however, I believe that communication skills, both in speaking and listening; empathy that has been forged from a challenging life; and the humility that is the hard-won cornerstone of my recovery, could all be beneficial for others. I can think of no better way to spend my remaining years. I hope that this information is of value to you; my detailed resume, as well as references, are available upon request. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me; you can ask -- or tell -- me anything. Thank you for your consideration.

My name is John Young. I’m a 67 year-old retired physician who was born, raised and worked in Toronto, Ontario, Canada until the arrival of Covid-19 in 2020 forced me to retire (I have chronic health issues that greatly increased the likelihood of a “poor outcome” if I were to become infected).
I worked as a family doctor for the first years of practice, providing care to a patient population that was low income and had a high incidence of mental health and addiction issues; in part because of this reality, I began providing psychotherapy to patients who requested it. I gradually reduced my until I devoted all of my time – and the remaining 30 years of my career – to working as a psychotherapist, with a particular focus on past trauma and its consequences, including personality disorders and substance misuse.

I can think of no better way to spend my remaining years.
I hope that this information is of value to you; my detailed resume, as well as references, are available upon request. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me; you can ask – or tell – me anything. Thank you for your consideration.
