paper Khadmod-Sonnet of The Wild (Feature Film)

As Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer for this feature film, I led the audio post-production during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic in India. The film, a powerful narrative on the destruction of jungles, wildlife, and the escalating water scarcity, required a highly intentional approach to sound design.

Given the film’s environmental themes, a key creative decision was to deliberately omit the vibrant sounds of nature, such as bird calls, from the jungle sequences. This subtle yet impactful choice aimed to underscore the profound loss and desolation brought upon by environmental degradation, immersing the audience in the film’s stark message.

With minimal usable location audio, approximately 90% of the film’s soundtrack was meticulously recreated through foley. This extensive foley work involved building the entire sonic world from the ground up, ensuring every rustle, step, and interaction felt authentic and precisely synchronized with the visuals. Despite the challenges of remote collaboration and limited on-set sound, the seamless integration of these recreated elements results in an audio experience that is virtually indistinguishable from naturally captured sound, demonstrating a strong adherence to image and narrative coherence. The audience consistently perceives the sound as organically “sticking” to the picture, a testament to the detailed and nuanced foley artistry employed.
