    Heritage and Design

Heritage and Design takes shape as a research project where, by bringing together different disciplines such as fashion design and animation, it became possible to work with artisans to create wearable artifacts that aim to re-signify traditional craftsmanship from three techniques: iraca palm weaving, leatherworking, and wood inlay (taracea).

The result is reflected in this short documentary, which is divided into four parts:
The documentary section, which provides context for the research project.

Origin, where we witness the creation of the craft from the very source of the material—in this case, wood.

Bond, which explores the relationship between the artisan, their workshop, and the base material used in their creation (leatherworking).

Memory, where iraca becomes the protagonist. Through costume design developed by fashion designers, with engravings of the artisans’ memories and other symbolic elements in the animation, we seek to reconnect with the heritage passed down from generation to generation through the technique of iraca palm weaving.

This video essay was created by me as part of a set of production elements developed for Heritage and Design. The animation, editing, filming, and the overall narrative construction of the piece were all part of my contribution to the project.

This is how Heritage and Design is consolidated—a project of research and creation by Diana R. Solano and Pablo Camero.
