    uniE621 Passport to the Future
In June 2023, UK Parliament published a cross-party Education Committee report highlighting the lack of time and resources available to schools to dedicate to careers education, despite its potential to boost young people’s attainment and future prospects. The report clearly states that “starting careers provision at an early age is essential in supporting children to learn about the world of work, developing high aspirations, and breaking down stereotypes.” In the summer of 2024, a group of primary schools in central Bedford, an area facing some of the highest levels of generational and multiple deprivation in the borough, observed a worrying trend: children’s career aspirations were often limited to stereotypical ‘success’ roles such as Footballer, YouTuber, or Influencer. These choices, seen by students as quick and easy routes to success, raised concerns among educators for being both unrealistic and lacking imagination. The schools hypothesised that guiding pupils through a reflective process in their final year of primary education could help them explore their motivations and interests more deeply, opening their eyes to a broader and more grounded set of career possibilities. The project required designing a personal, engaging document for each student, a space for them to reflect on their goals and discover diverse opportunities aligned with their skills, interests, and potential. uniE621 Book Cover - Norwegian Wood
Brief Overview The task is to design a cover for the vintage collection of Penguin Books, specifically for Norwegian Wood, a novel by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. Set in late 1960s Tokyo, the novel is a nostalgic exploration of love, loss, and the internal struggles of youth, juxtaposed against a backdrop of student protests and societal change. Creative Approach To capture the essence of Norwegian Wood, I explored the themes of nostalgia, Japanese culture, and personal introspection. After conducting research and analysing the novel’s deeper meanings, I developed two distinct graphic concepts for the cover. The Fan and Vinyl Concept Inspiration: The fan is a traditional symbol of Japanese culture, representing elegance, simplicity, and a connection to nature. I paired this with the image of a vinyl record, which resonates with the novel’s time period, invoking a sense of nostalgia and the emotional connection to music. Visual Elements: The vinyl reflects a deep red sunset, symbolising both the emotional warmth and melancholy of the story. The centre of the image forms a small sun, representing the duality of beginnings and endings, much like the novel’s exploration of youth, love, and loss. Symbolism: The combination of these elements reflects the delicate balance of emotions within the story, bringing both cultural depth and a nod to the era in which the novel is set.
