Hello, my name is James. I am a third-year design student at York University currently abroad in Germany at the Bauhaus Universität-Weimar. I have had the chance to study under very good designers in Toronto and Germany alike, along with participating in design competitions. One of which I was very fortunate to have finished in first place in. I have previous freelancing experience working on everything from flyer/brochure design to skincare products and finally wine tasting. Within these projects, I find myself taking fairly simple ideas and transforming them into deep and nuanced ones. Finally, whether I am working on branding, logo, editorial, or poster design projects. The bottom line is what problem am I solving and who am I solving it for?

For the stickers, I created a pattern using the logo mark. As well as using the brand's chosen colours, light beige and green. For the box I utilized the green gradient for the outside and inside. I drew simple vector images of the serum and cleanser bottles and face mask for the directions. Staying consistent with the client's wishes. For both I was inspired by nature and golden-hour portrait photography. Harking back to the logo being rays of light.
    uniE621 Visual Perceptions
How does the perceived meaning that a hand gesture holds get challenged? Where do little nuances appear, and how does the shape of the sign change depending on the context? Where does the line get drawn to say this isn’t the original anymore but something new entirely? By making the OK sign into a form of visual communication and putting it through the seven elements of design: imagery, shape, line, texture, type, and colour. Can we attempt to answer these questions, or does it bring up new ones instead?
    uniE608 3D Object animation
Part of the Juyolamznhurop brand identity project. This 3D animation was made with Blender. The challenge was to create a new 3D shape that doesn't exist in real life and place the brand poster onto the shape. This object could be an example of a product that Juyolamznhurop may make if it existed.
    uniE621 Lunenburg Trawlers Brand Identity
A brand identity for a fictional hockey team, the Lunenburg Trawlers. Inspired by the Utah Mammoth's brand identity. I researched the area and landed upon fishing boats, specifically trawlers, as the icon and team name. The logo is made up of an old trawler boat and hockey sticks mimicking the fishing net beams found on the boats. The bow of the boat is angled to evoke a tough and powerful presence. The colour palette is inspired by the colours of the local homes and buildings, primarily red with shades of blue and cream.
uniE608 Juyolamznhurop Brand Identity—Horizons Beyond the Brief: Bauhaus Univeristät-Weimar
This project was an accumulation of work over 5 months. Starting as a small symbol and an extremely long made-up word, it became a brand identity. The project was split up into different parts, and every week there was a new part to work on and add to the previous week's version. We were advised to make more mistakes rather than well-polished designs. By the end you had to make a logo (symbol + word mark), brand poster, and product animation. brandidentity posterdesign graphicdesign
    uniE621 Swift Badminton Club
This project was for a competition that I and two others worked together on as a group. The theme of the competition was “Circular Connections.” Taking unlikely partnerships that could work together cyclically. You could create a campaign or digital platform. My group and I were intrigued by taking fishing waste in the ocean and making it into badminton equipment. Turning the waste into recycled nets, rackets, and shuttlecocks. We created a brand campaign along with an app. For the brand we emphasized a confident but approachable style to cater towards young adults who are active and environmentally conscious. I created promotional posters with the taglines "From the Ocean to the Court” and “Be Swift, Shift the Game.” We chose a vibrant blue as the primary colour and orangish-reds and yellows as the accents. Plus a punchy but playful typeface for the wordmark.
