Hello, I’m Zhu Yu. I was born on March 8, 1981, in Liushi Town, Yueqing, Zhejiang Province. I earned my degree from the Video Art Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2008 and now divide my time between Beijing, the United States, and Shanghai, creating primarily with video, installation, and photography. Movable maps are my current artistic direction, and I see my work as markers I relabel within a misty forest. My own social upbringing acts like a meridian in my search for coordinates and latitude of cognition. I come from a town shaped by manufacturing and industrial change, which informs my ongoing fascination with industrialization, crowd memory, and the way we remember factory lines. I often strip away language, letting my body interact with external environments to extend the meaning of my work through radical juxtaposition. In projects like Nobody is Somebody, I explore identity and power through repetition and substitution, while in Wave and UTC-5 I stage shifting contexts to reveal the evolving relationships between people, objects, and technology.
