My goal in art and design, along with my intentions for my work are to find the right color, type, and style to create aesthetically pleasing, inspirational, and professional design solutions for the world around us. Graphic Design was not my first choice and I had originally planned to become an illustrator, sculptor, or painter. In 2020 the unexpected pandemic forced the world to lock-down and operate more digitally. I then took a break from my school and art, but later ended up at Elizabeth City State University (encouraged by my sister’s volleyball scholarship) where I would switch focus and finish my bachelor’s degree learning the artistry of graphic design.
Once I got more comfortable with the transition, I began to fall in love with art and design all over again. Having that background focused in studio art gave me a solid foundation and all the tools I need to excel in the field. Although graphic design is a different medium, the creativity is endless, still allowing me to apply traits like my attention to detail, use of bold colors, and clean dynamic designs into my work.
Art and design are EVERYWHERE, and the majority of my inspiration stems from the art, people, and experiences that surround me. Throughout my years of studying design, I have gained control of understanding these factors to transform them into beautiful, recognizable visuals that we can use to communicate with each other. My work is also inspired by the Pop Art Movement. I enjoy incorporating its use of vibrant colors, variety, and ‘outside the box’ thinking into my designs. Artists at this time like Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein gave us a whole new look on art by having an open mind which I also take into account with my art Having an open mind helps me to understand exactly what the client wants to say and feel with their design.
The ones that know me best typically use the term “perfectionist”, but I like to call it 'detail- oriented". The details are what makes the design special and what separates the good design from the great ones. Details also give the work identity and characteristics which are also valuable for branding. These traits drive me as a designer to constantly learn and improve to create the highest quality of work that my client and I are proud of.
