Composer of sacred and secular music from masses and motets for Rye St Antony School to GRRRLZ, a musical comedy which premièred in Oxford and London in 2021.
Chris Gill is a UK-based composer, musical director, conductor and educator with over twenty-five years’ experience across music, theatre and teaching. His work combines strong dramatic instinct with practical musicianship, shaped by a career conducting orchestras, choirs and opera companies throughout the UK.
He wrote the book, music and lyrics for GRRRLZ, a musical comedy about female empowerment in the late 1960s, which received its London première in 2021. His wider output includes choral music, educational music, vocal arrangements and reduced orchestrations for professional and community performance contexts.
Chris founded the professional touring company Heritage Opera in 2006 and has conducted over 200 performances, including the world première of Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park. His background as an author of widely used music education books, including Harmonising Bach Chorales, The A Level Music Study Guide and Let’s Get Musical, gives his composition and arrangement work a clear, performer-friendly style.
He is particularly interested in writing music that is expressive, accessible and theatrically alive, with a strong understanding of voices, ensembles and the needs of real performers
