Sydney-based composer Daniel Markulic can only be described as an experimentalist. Markulic began his journey as a composer around 2010 when his interest was transfixed by the works of Childish Gambino, Funkadelic, Hiatus Kayote, Led Zeppelin and Elton John, among others. Seeking like-minded people, Markulic played in 'Kimono Pool' - a Wollongong based funk band. Soon after, his unsated fascination for music composition took him elsewhere. Encountering the likes of Shostakovich, Andriessen, Davis, Arvo Part & Christian Scott during his time studying Composition at the Australian Institute of Music, Markulic began incorporating his inclination for generative and aleatoric music into works of his own. His first two works, 'Octatonic Duet of the Grounded and Floating Musicians', and 'Artefacts' reveal an intense and characteristic fascination with the role of abstraction in all parts of his music - conception, structure, score, texture, performance & production.
