"The Red Square" (Meydan-e Sorkh) – Production Sound Recordist
Red Square is a dramatic television series filled with conflict, tension, and emotionally demanding scenes, featuring a large cast of well-known actors and a wide variety of filming locations. As the Production Sound Recordist, my main responsibility was to capture clean, detailed, and natural production sound and dialogue under a wide range of challenging conditions. The variety of locations required careful attention to the acoustic characteristics of each environment, as well as adapting microphone placement and recording techniques to maintain consistent dialogue quality throughout the series. Working with a large cast and demanding dramatic scenes also required close coordination with the director, cinematography team, and other departments to ensure that sound remained unobtrusive while providing the best possible recording quality. The project involved both controlled and challenging locations, requiring continuous attention to unwanted environmental noise, room acoustics, background activity, and performance dynamics. My focus throughout the production was to deliver reliable, clean, and natural production recordings that provided a strong foundation for the dialogue editing, sound design, and final mix in post-production.
Artist – Psychological & Surreal Sound Design
Artist is a short film exploring the struggles of an actor dealing with financial difficulties, relationship tensions, and the pressure of an uncertain career. The conflict between the actor and his wife gradually becomes intertwined with his own internal struggles, creating a world that shifts between reality, memory, imagination, and psychological tension. The sound design was developed as an important part of this subjective storytelling. Rather than simply reproducing the physical environment, I used sound to reflect the protagonist’s mental and emotional state and to blur the boundary between what is happening around him and what is happening inside his mind. A large part of the project focused on creating and shaping atmospheric soundscapes for the film’s surreal and psychological sequences. Environmental sounds were carefully designed, layered, and manipulated to create a sense of unease, isolation, pressure, and emotional instability. The contrast between the ordinary domestic environment and the increasingly distorted inner world of the protagonist was an essential element of the sound design. Changes in ambience, perspective, density, space, and sonic texture were used to gradually intensify the psychological tension and guide the audience deeper into his subjective experience. The overall soundscape was designed to function as an extension of the character’s mind, allowing the audience to experience his frustration, anxiety, isolation, and internal conflict not only through the story and performances, but also through the sound itself.
Rastakhiz – Sound Design & Mixing
Rastakhiz is a short dramatic film centered around two sisters living through a period of war and ideological conflict. Although they share the same physical space, they hold fundamentally different beliefs, creating an increasing sense of tension and confrontation between them. As the story progresses, this conflict ultimately leads to a tragic confrontation in which the authoritarian sister is killed by someone who shares her own ideology. The film takes place entirely indoors, primarily across two rooms within a hospital. One of the main challenges in the sound design was establishing the hospital environment and making the audience feel the presence of the location without relying on exterior visuals. I created a detailed hospital soundscape using subtle environmental elements, distant activity, room tone, and carefully controlled ambience. In contrast, the world outside the hospital was represented through an intense and constantly threatening war atmosphere. I designed the distant explosions, gunfire, military activity, and surrounding destruction with varying levels of proximity and intensity, creating the feeling that the war was constantly present just beyond the hospital walls. The intensity and distance of the exterior war sounds were also carefully shaped in relation to the emotional tension between the two sisters. As their ideological conflict escalates, the outside world becomes increasingly present and oppressive, creating a parallel between the external war and the internal conflict between the characters. A key aspect of the sound design was maintaining the contrast between the intimate, confined hospital environment and the violent, chaotic world outside. This contrast gradually becomes part of the film’s emotional language, allowing the soundscape itself to contribute to the narrative and build tension without relying solely on dialogue or visuals. The overall sound design was created to make the audience feel both the physical confinement of the hospital and the psychological pressure of a war taking place just beyond its walls.
Sound recorder / sound designer / Dialogue Editing / Noise Reduction / Mixing
Based on the screenplay, the characters’ personalities, and the social and personal challenges they face, I developed the film’s soundscape to support the emotional world of the story and create a stronger connection between the audience and the characters. I designed and selected the appropriate ambiences and environmental sounds for each location, taking into consideration the characters’ living conditions and the atmosphere required by each scene. The goal was to make the emotional subtext of the story present not only through the dialogue and visuals, but also through the sound environment. Particular attention was given to preserving the natural dynamics of the dialogue, avoiding an overly compressed or uniform sound while maintaining clarity and intelligibility throughout the film. Due to the challenging and often very busy filming locations, a significant amount of unwanted background noise and environmental interference had to be managed during both production sound and post-production. I used a range of advanced and up-to-date dialogue editing, noise reduction, and sound restoration tools to clean and control the recordings while preserving the natural character of the performances. The overall sound design was developed to complement the film’s dramatic and social themes, allowing the atmosphere, locations, and subtle details of the soundscape to reinforce the emotional experience of the story.
