Throughout my career as an artist, designer, educator, and researcher, I have become increasingly interested in the power of visual storytelling to support children’s learning, imagination, and emotional development. My academic journey and over twenty-five years of international professional experience have strengthened my belief that illustration can bridge cultures, encourage communication, and make learning more accessible for all children. This passion has inspired me to pursue further study in children’s book illustration I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from the Academy of Arts in Egypt, a Diploma in Interior Decorating from ICS Canada, a Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools in the UK, a Master of Arts in Design from the University of Sunderland, and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Sunderland. My studies have allowed me to explore the relationship between art, design, education, and psychology, providing a strong interdisciplinary foundation for my creative practice. My professional experience has been shaped by living and working in Egypt, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. These diverse cultural experiences have broadened my artistic perspective and inspired me to celebrate cultural diversity through visual communication. Travelling extensively and participating in international exhibitions, workshops and collaborative projects have strengthened my understanding of how art can connect people across different languages and backgrounds. For more than twenty-five years, I have worked with children, including those with special educational needs (SEN), in educational settings. This experience has shown me that many children communicate more confidently through images than through words. It has also inspired my research into visual communication and the development of creative learning resources that support social communication, emotional wellbeing, and inclusive education, particularly for children with autism. My research and practice have reinforced my belief that illustrations can do much more than accompany text. They can help children understand emotions, develop empathy, appreciate diverse cultures, and build confidence in expressing themselves. I am especially interested in creating picture books that encourage inclusion, celebrate diversity, and support children with different learning needs. I hope to produce stories that are visually engaging, emotionally meaningful, and accessible to all readers. I am now looking to develop my illustration skills within a dedicated children’s book illustration programme. I want to refine my visual storytelling, character development, narrative sequencing and publishing knowledge while learning from experienced practitioners and collaborating with fellow illustrators.
