Hi there , I'm Giselle Gao, a UX Designer and Researcher with a Master of Information in User Experience Design from the University of Toronto and a B.A. in Art Practice from UC Berkeley. My strong foundation in visual arts and design aesthetics, combined with technical UX expertise, allows me to create not only functional but also visually compelling user experiences. My design capabilities span both traditional and digital mediums—I'm highly proficient in Figma for collaborative design and prototyping, as well as the complete Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and Lightroom. This diverse toolkit enables me to craft custom illustrations, develop sophisticated visual design systems, and create high-fidelity prototypes with meticulous attention to aesthetic detail. My background in art practice and passion for photography deeply inform my approach to visual hierarchy, color theory, and composition in digital interfaces. Most recently, I led the redesign of UHNLibraries.ca at University Health Network, using Figma for wireframing and prototyping while applying both research methodology and visual design skills to create intuitive, aesthetically pleasing interfaces for healthcare professionals. Previously, as Lead UI/UX Designer at Beijing Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, I designed complex medical diagnosis interfaces in Figma where clear visual communication was critical for user safety and efficiency. What sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly blend artistic sensibility with user-centered design principles. Whether I'm sketching initial concepts, creating detailed wireframes and interactive prototypes in Figma, or developing custom graphics in Illustrator, I approach each project with both analytical rigor and creative vision. My artistic background in fine arts and photography has trained my eye for composition, color, and visual storytelling—skills that translate directly into creating memorable and effective digital experiences. I'm actively seeking opportunities where I can leverage both my technical design skills and artistic capabilities to solve complex design challenges while creating beautiful, functional solutions for meaningful projects.
