I’m Greg Gonzalez, a music industry professional with 30+ years of performance, songwriting, producing, audio engineering, mixing, and music business experience. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and a founding member of the Grammy-award winning Latin big band Grupo Fantasma, funk ensemble Brownout, and the Peruvian-inspired combo Money Chicha. Throughout my career, I’ve toured nationally and internationally, including tours of Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Pakistan. I’ve been selected as a Cultural Ambassador for the City of Austin for Grupo Fantasma’s 2019 music tour of Russia and Turkey, and I’ve also been recognized with a Capacity Building Grant (2019) to study music in Barranquilla and Cartagena, Colombia with local traditional cumbia masters. As a songwriter, producer, and performer, I’ve recorded on over a dozen albums, and as a sideman I’ve recorded on several more. In my work as a songwriter, producer, and performer, I’ve co-mixed and co-produced the Grammy-nominated Sonidos Gold and the Grammy-award winning El Existential (Grupo Fantasma). My songs have appeared in advertisements, television, and movies. I’ve also performed onstage and on records with artists including Prince, Sheila-E, GZA (Wu-Tang Clan), The Pharcyde, Kali Uchis, Daniel Johnston, Larry Harlow (Fania All-Stars), Joe Bataan, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Biz Markie, Bushwick Bill (Get Boyz), Dean Ween (Ween), Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads), Chepito Areas (Santana), and many others. When I was in graduate school during COVID, I produced the 26-episode podcast This Is Cumbia, and I also worked as a podcast editor on the Crooked Power podcast. Later, I worked as the podcast manager/supervisor for People’s History in Texas, helping lead the production and management of the series. During my time in the City of Austin, I served as a Program Manager for the Music and Entertainment Division, focusing on artist development, grant making, and advocacy for the local music community. In that role, I produced three seasons of the SoundON music/video series in collaboration with ATXN, curated and hosted 50+ episodes of the City Hall Sessions music and interview series, and curated four episodes of the Live from the Library series. I also produced dozens of SXSW community showcases and booked hundreds of music performances. In the 2025–2026 cycle, I was a member of Leadership Austin. The program brings together community leaders to learn about Austin’s systems, meet cross-sector leaders, and build a network for putting insight into action. Through it, I strengthened my leadership perspective—connecting the dots between culture, public service, and sustainable community impact—while learning how to collaborate more effectively with people who bring different experiences and expertise to the table. I earned a BA in History from UT Austin and an MA in Advertising, also from UT Austin.
