I composed the music for The University of West London Rugby Team’s Movember advertisement.
I wrote this Percussion Feature for Royal Holloway Brass Band for their programme for UniBrass competition.
The Hollow Earth is a powerful and evocative composition that places percussion at the forefront, vividly depicting
the collapse of a mine. Inspired by the raw, untamed forces of nature and the fragility of human endeavors, this
piece takes listeners deep beneath the surface of the earth, immersing them in a world of tension, danger,
and ultimate destruction.
The work begins with a still, ominous opening. Low, rumbling tones from the timpani
and faint metallic sounds from auxiliary percussion create an atmosphere of oppressive silence, evoking the dark,
claustrophobic depths of the mine. The brass section adds weight, setting a foreboding tone as if the mine itself is
holding its breath.
As the piece progresses, the marimba takes center stage, portraying the unsettling drip of water
deep underground. This motif grows in complexity, capturing the intricate balance of life and danger within
the mine. However, this is soon interrupted by the growing chaos of the drum feature.
The core of The Hollow Earth is its dramatic and relentless percussion ensemble. The interplay of the drums,
timpani, and auxiliary percussion illustrates the mine’s collapse with intricate, syncopated rhythms and thunderous
strikes. The drums, in particular, represent the cracking and crumbling of the earth, while cymbal crashes and
tam-tam rolls mimic the deafening roar of falling rock. This section is chaotic, dissonant, and unrelenting—a
musical embodiment of disaster.
The lower brass enters with heavy, descending lines, representing the unstoppable force of the mine giving way.
Dissonant chords from the horns and cornets interject like distant cries, adding to the sense of panic and despair.
The texture thickens and builds to a climactic point before suddenly cutting off, leaving a moment of stunned silence.
The piece concludes with a slow, solemn ending—a reflection on the devastation left behind. Muted brass fade into
silence, capturing the weight of loss and the haunting emptiness of the collapsed mine.
Through its vivid use of percussion and orchestration, The Hollow Earth paints a visceral picture of a mine’s
collapse.
