I’m Ben Hunter, a Mechanical Design Engineer based in the United Kingdom with over seven years of experience across design and manufacturing environments. I completed a degree apprenticeship, combining academic study with full-time industry practice to develop a strong, practical, system-based approach to solving problems. I have also undertaken international freelance contracting, which helped me become more independent and accountable for client-led design work. Most recently, I’ve taken on technical ownership of R&D projects, progressing concepts through prototyping, validation and production tooling.

Work Experience
Junior Design Engineer at Charles Austen Pumps Ltd
March 1, 2024 - December 31, 2025Led technical development of pump concepts from early-stage prototyping through to injection-moulded production releases. Performed flow analysis to predict mould filling behaviour and reduce defect risk prior to steel tool manufacture. Utilised micro-injection moulding and 3D printed tooling to accelerate rapid prototyping and structural validation, designing the parts, moulds, ejector systems and inserts. Produced detailed technical drawings using GD&T, limits & fits and precision callouts to support Ol make rs and machinists.
Design Engineer Consultant at Impress Precision Ltd
January 1, 2023 - March 31, 2024Led structural redesign of medical sharps bins and mounting systems to improve manufacturing and assembly costs. Designed components to reduce tooling complexity, including avoidance of side actions and the use of interchangeable inserts. Maintained structured communication and project delivery while working internationally across time zones. Modified customer designs to allow for injection moulding and reduce the risk of cosmetic defects or structural failure.
Manufacturing / Design Engineer Degree Apprentice at Impress Precision Ltd
September 1, 2018 - January 31, 2023Designed and detailed injection-moulded plastic components and assemblies using SolidWorks for manufacture. Collaborated with mould tooling engineers on tool construction and structural integration. Designed corrective jigs to mitigate post-mould warp and maintain dimensional stability. Managed CNC programming and machining operations for prototype and production components. Monitored production lines to identify early-stage dimensional deviations and maintain quality consistency.
Selected Structural Project – Medical Sharps Bin Mounting Adaptor at Impress Precision Ltd
March 1, 2022 - January 31, 2023Designed a load-bearing plastic adaptor supporting a cantilevered medical bin, accounting for increased bending moment due to offset geometry. Engineered the component to comply with BS EN ISO 23907-1:2019 load performance requirements. Interpreted regulatory criteria (e.g., 150% allowable gross mass for one hour) and validated the design at 200% load to provide a trusted safety margin. Considered load paths, stress concentration and long-term deformation behavior when refining structural geometry. Used rapid in-house prototyping to experimentally assess sustained-load deformation and high-stress regions, controlling deflection and ensuring structural reliability prior to release.
