John produces music that blends genres. For the actual-play show DesiQuest, co-composer Aalok Mehta and I combined Western and South Asian musical genres. Thunderous battle cues, meditative drone soundscapes, and dreamlike realms were inspired by both classical Indian Ragas and epic orchestral themes. Our production strategy meant recruiting and deeply involving virtuoso soloists who have spent a lifetime studying their musical traditions. The key is to provide a musical framework and themes that allow soloists to express their authentic voice developed over a lifetime. In the case of DesiQuest, this meant providing the orchestra, electronica, and themes, upon which soloists performed on sitar, santoor, bansuri, Carnatic violin, and percussion.
