I am Johnpaul Yi, a musician and producer based near Bath. I believe that music has the power to transport you to another time and place, real or imagined, and can even soothe the soul. Music has always played a key role in my life as both a creative outlet and a way to express and connect with people. When I'm not making orchestral music for media and video games (yimusic.co.uk), I write Synthwave-inspired music under my alter-ego, Midnight Child (midnightchild.com). I started as a live performer, playing guitar and singing in a band around the Scarborough area. I've recently completed an MFA in composing for media and video games from Thinkspace Education/Arts University Bournemouth where I had the opportunity to work with the MET film school to score 'In Your Own Time' (_Website not available. uniE608 Advert for a Racing Game - Road to Hell
This 'trailerised' version of Road to Hell by Chris Rea was composed for a racing game trailer. This style of 'subverting' what is seen on screen is becoming more common in modern video games (a great example is ‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash in the live action trailer for Prototype 2); however, the lyrics in the music (if there are any) still need to be relevant to the visuals/story onscreen. Writing music for a trailer is about selling an experience which can include memories and feelings, therefore by using an established song you are accessing collective experiences of your target audience and transposing them to the game. music musicproduction art composing video
uniE608 Advert for Egypt - Echoes of Strength
This composition was inspired by beautiful Egypt, and features the vocals of Hayat Selim from Sonuscore's Ethnic Vocal Phrases. I created the video (I have a licence to use the footage) as if I was creating a tourism advertisment for Egypt. Lots of traditional orchestral instruments used, plus some more unique instruments including Death Meditations from Mntra.io and Baltic Waves from Lunacy Inc. music musicproduction spotify art composer video
uniE608 Kingdom Crush Tower Defence Game Music
Welcome to Kingdom Crush, a Tower Defence Game! This is an example of both vertical music (the different phases of music as the enemy waves progress) and horizontal music (moving between the menu, levels, victory and death music). The music has been composed using Ableton Live and applied using Unity and Wwise. I composed this in G Major, a key associated with fantasy which can be described as ‘tender’ and ‘peaceful’, but also ‘rustic’ and ‘serious’. The music draws inspiration from other games such as Kingdom Rush and Dungeon Defenders and uses drums to convey a military-strategy-feel with some medieval-style instrument sounds, conveying fun, excitement and playfulness, without becoming too dark and brooding like some medieval music can (particularly those aimed at older audiences). Each level has a different melody that is simple enough to hum and interesting enough to be catchy. A choir melody and French horn counter-melody are used, a soft timpani rhythm (reminiscent of a bodhran), taiko hits, and brass braams (which lean into the ‘battle’ theme), and accents from the trumpet and mandolin. Custom transitions (stingers) have been defined, such as a simple harp gliss when moving between the menu and the other scenes to give feedback to the user that something is changing. Sounds for the ‘FireStorm’ and ‘Starburst’ special abilities have been created using granulated foley sounds to emulate fire explosions and crackling electricity respectively. uniE608 Sentinels Revenge Sci-fi Shooter Game Music - Level 1
Welcome to Sentinels Revenge, a Sci-Fi Shooter Game! This is the dynamic music for Level 1, composed using Ableton Live and applied using Unity and Wwise. This music uses a mainly electronic palette to convey a futuristic (sci-fi) yet nostalgic (80’s/90’s) feel, similar to Far Cry Blood Dragon. The sound is sometimes cliched intentionally, but orchestral elements have also been incorporated to give a slightly more contemporary feel. The exploration music is designed to feel mysterious and cool, with strings and additional percussion providing tension. Combat music uses ‘epic’ style percussion with electric guitar to increase the ‘power’, and a slight increase in volume in some elements as this has been shown to increase tension. State changes have been used to elicit a ‘spatial narrative’ for the player, such as Moroccan vocals in the desert, dripping water in the sewers, or clapping/chanting in the boss battle arena, helping the player immerse in the environment. Layering has also been used to connect the player to their character energy, such as dissonance being introduced if the shields are reduced, increased tension if the player is moving fast or their health is reduced. State changes are also used to change the ‘power’ of the music when moving from exploration to combat, encouraging the player to act and take risks. This music draws inspiration from 80's synthwave, and games such as Far Cry Blood Dragon and Crysis 2. The electronic elements use a variety of synthesis techniques to modulate the music in different ways, and orchestral elements have been used to give a more contemporary feel. uniE608 Sentinels Revenge Sci-fi Shooter Game Music - Main Menu
Welcome to Sentinels Revenge, a Sci-Fi Shooter Game! This is the main menu music, composed using Ableton Live and applied using Unity and Wwise. Menu music is usually where the composer’s main theme is showcased, e.g. Christopher Tin’s ‘Baba Yetu’ from Civilisation 4, but can also help set the scene or mood of a game, e.g. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (David García; Andy LaPlegua) or XCOM (Roland Rizzo), where you hear diegetic voices that the main character can also hear. This can help aid the player with immediate immersion into the game. This music draws inspiration from 80's synthwave, and games such as Far Cry Blood Dragon and Crysis 2. The electronic elements use a variety of synthesis techniques to modulate the music in different ways, and orchestral elements have been used to give a more contemporary feel.
