Leon Bowers (b. 1981) is an Australian artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. His paintings switch between observation, memory and constructed imagery, circling psychological and ecological tensions embedding within contemporary life. Through varied techniques such as layering and gesture, he uses painting as a way of thinking through instability, where images shift between recognition and dissolution
He completed a Master of Contemporary Art at the Victorian College of the Arts with First Class Honours in 2025, following a diploma in Graphic Design (2000). He also completed the Turps Painting Programme in London in 2019. After 15 years working in London across advertising and fashion, he returned to Melbourne to focus on painting as a sustained studio practice.
In 2025, Leon was recipient of the Orloff Family Charitable Trust Award. He has also undertaken residencies at PADA in Lisbon and Casa Lü in Mexico City, and has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across London, Mexico City, Lisbon, Melbourne, Sydney and Los Angeles.
My practice traverses solo studio work and public-facing commissions, from large-scale interior murals to intimate graphic design projects. I’m drawn to memory and materiality, and I enjoy curating and presenting group shows as well as delivering hands-on design, production and installation to bring ideas from concept to finished piece.
