In my understanding, art is a reaction to reality that expresses an opinion, or in my work, an ideal. My ideal pays homage to the reveries of my adolescence, what I perceive as nostalgia and comfort, which my mind constructed as a stark inverse of my Floridian surroundings. The world I envision encompasses a love of the macabre, history, fashion, music, cartoons, theater, and details that I combine to make an imaginary world tangible. I strive to depict people and surroundings with the off-kilter charm that I perceive the world in. My long-cultivated passion for fiction and the universality of storytelling through actions and gestures is what draws me to look to the theater for inspiration in my work. The cultivated illusion of theatricality is what guides my dusky visions, as I prioritize making melodrama ooze from every gesture and composition. Through paper, canvas, or a screen, I can externalize what I cannot with my voice and body, moving my subjects and figures with the fluidity and eccentricity I can only visualize internally. In a celebration of the macabre and theatrical, I aim to open people’s minds to consider and reflect on the beauty of both darkness and light, as well as the combination of comedy and tragedy.
