    Andes Plane Crash

It’s the afternoon of the 21st of December 1972, on the rocky bank of the Río Azufre, Argentina.

A veil of fog begins to lift, and a glimmer of sun pierces through the grey sky. For a moment, it promises warmth, but it is short-lived. Here, in the Andean wilderness, temperatures drop below zero in the blink of an eye, even at this time of year.

Three Chilean muleteers - arrieros - trek through the narrow valley alongside the river, their packhorses snorting heavy clouds of breath into the cold thin air. The day had been long, meandering icy and slushy slopes of the foothills of the mountains, and now, man and beast are hungry, aching, and ready to stop.

Suddenly, an arriero is astonished to spot two men frantically waving their arms from across the opposite bank of the river.

The men appear ragged and gaunt, their faces hidden beneath thick beards, their clothing unfitting for the terrain. They don’t look like hikers. They don’t look like they belong in this place at all.

One of them shouts, but the river drowns out his voice.

The lead arriero calls back, ‘Mañana.’
    Tomorrow. They will return.

For the two men on the other side - Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado - tomorrow feels like an eternity.
They’ve trudged miles upon miles over white stillness, snow blind and frost-bitten — ten days of bitter, frozen conditions, the kind of cold that hurts your bones.

They’ve slept in a bag stitched together from scraps of aircraft insulation. They’ve survived on mouthfuls of snow and sheer will. No compass. Only a direction - downhill - and a hope that somewhere in the west, civilisation might be found.

They are not surviving for themselves alone. Back in the mountains, at the site of a shattered fuselage, fourteen others are waiting. Injured. Starving. Slowly dying.

True to their word, the arrieros return. A loaf of bread is thrown across the river, followed by a pencil and sheet of paper tied to a stone.

Hastily, with numb fingers, a reply is returned:
‘I come from an aeroplane that crashed in the mountains. I am Uruguayan. We have been walking for 10 days. I have a wounded friend up there. In the plane, there are still 14 injured people. We need to get out of here quickly, and we don’t know how to. We don’t have any food. We are very weak. When are you going to come to get us? Please, we can’t even walk. Where are we?’

Sergio Catalán reads the note in disbelief. How can anyone survive in the frozen mountains without food? He makes a gesture he understands and sets in motion the sensational rescue operation that will shock the world. Yet, Sergio cannot fathom how men have survived without food for so many days. The question won’t leave his mind, and he only has one recurring answer … cannibalism.
