Hi, I'm Matthew O'Brien, a student currently enrolled in the MFA program at Maharishi International University. After picking up a screenwriting class in my final semester at SUNY Cortland, I decided to apply for this program, which was co-created by filmmaker David Lynch. Over the past year and a half I've worked on a screenplay for an animated television show. With the guidance I've received from my mentor, JV Hart, whose accomplishments include writing "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Hook", I have improved my storywriting abilities tremendously. Here is a transcript of the feedback I received from him this past semester "Matthew has an imagination that is basically a tsunami of ideas, images, worlds, characters, creatures, gadgets -- never ending and does not stop. A huge asset in this creative business. Corralling and focusing and shaping all those amazing elements into a cohesive scenario is Matthew's hill to climb. He certainly has demonstrated his ability to rethink, repurpose and make course corrections based on input and his own sense of big picture narrative that improve his narrative without undoing and dismantling the attraction we readers undeniably have to his works. I have been very impressed with his live streaming imagination that is effortless on his part. He has a storyteller’s tone and delivery and is fun and easy to read and it is a treat to listen him speak about his creations. He should be Irish and speak with a brogue. As Matthew learns to craft and hone his stories and keep them filled with his magical characters and creatures, oh, and eccentric humans (especially young people) his will be an all-powerful Frog!!!! His prose is engaging and magical and he may want to consider writing a fantasy adventure novel about the worlds of Marvin and Barney." What most excites me about the opportunity to work as a Screenwriter at Twine is how necessary it will be to collaborate with others and be helpful. As much as I have loved writing my own story, I have equally enjoyed hearing my fellow students ideas and participating in their brainstorming processes. I also am hoping to move out of the United States, which I could do via my Grandfathers' dual citizenship. Parts of the story I am currently writing are influenced by my Irish heritage, so although the job is remote, I'd like to move to Ireland as I believe it would greatly inspire my own personal work. Thank you for the opportunity.
