    My most recent show reel!
    uniE608 Counterpoint
Concept Overview Counterpoint is a short 3D animated film that explores the complexities of bicultural identity through the metaphor of musical counterpoint, where two distinct yet interdependent voices move in relation to one another. Visual and Technical Approach Created in Blender, the animation uses contrasting visual rhythms, layered movement, and spatial tension to reflect the lived experience of navigating between cultures. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the piece embraces coexistence, dissonance, and harmony as central to bicultural life. Themes of Identity and Duality Counterpoint invites viewers to reflect on how identity can be multifaceted and fluid, less about blending into a single voice, and more about learning to live in dialogue with difference. Creative Process and Tools This was a passion project that allowed me to visually explore a deeply personal part of my life through 3D for the first time. It was also my first time using Blender, and I really enjoyed learning the software while figuring out how to translate emotion and memory into a digital space. Everything was built using a combination of my own modelling and free-to-use assets sourced online. Personal Connection and Shared Resonance What made this project especially meaningful was the chance to put myself into the work, embedding aspects of my own upbringing, identity, and experiences. At the same time, it became a way to connect with others who may have grown up navigating similar cultural complexities. The process reminded me that even personal stories can hold shared resonance.
    uniE608 Gurbet
Concept Overview Gurbet is a motion piece about the distance between myself and my Turkish family, especially my BabaAnne. The narrative is built around a real phone call with her. It becomes both a point of connection and a reminder of separation. The work focuses on the tenderness, longing, and quiet ache of living between places, speaking to anyone who has felt the pull of home from far away. Hybrid Animation Approach The film blends real photos with vector and frame-by-frame animation. The photos act as anchors to lived experience, while the animated elements show how memories feel rather than how they literally happened. The rhythm of the conversation shapes the pacing. My process involved gathering family photos and sounds, sketching storyboards, and building sequences in After Effects that focus on emotional truth over accuracy. Cinematic Moments of Memory The story plays out through small, familiar moments. Beaches, road trips, food being prepared, light through curtains, quiet pauses. Each scene holds long enough for the audience to sit with the feeling of closeness and distance at the same time. Ordinary details become meaningful through the lens of longing. Emotional Resonance The piece encourages viewers to reflect on their own experiences of separation. By mixing real and interpreted imagery, the film shows how memory carries love across distance, even when you are far from the people who shaped you. A Meditation on Distance Gurbet is ultimately a reflection on family, longing, and the persistence of care. Through its mix of real and animated imagery, it highlights how memory and emotion sustain connection when home and loved ones are far away.
    uniE608 Shine A Light
Campaign Overview “Shine a Light” is a motion-based awareness campaign that exposes the widespread exploitation of migrant workers across multiple sectors in Aotearoa New Zealand, including horticulture, hospitality, construction, and domestic work. Core Narrative Focus At the heart of the campaign is a stylised short animation, designed to illuminate the often-invisible abuse and precarious conditions faced by migrants behind the nation’s labour force. Parallel Storytelling Approach In Shine a Light, parallel storytelling is used through the careful weaving together of audio interviews from multiple survivors of modern slavery. Each voice represents an individual experience, unique in its details, setting, and emotional weight, but when layered side by side, they reveal a shared, systemic narrative. Intercut Voices as Collective Testimony Rather than telling one person’s story from beginning to end, the audio is intercut, allowing different voices to speak on similar moments in their journey, being recruited, the promise of opportunity, the arrival, the exploitation, the fear, and the aftermath. These voices unfold in parallel, forming a collective testimony. Purpose and Audience Impact Rather than offering solutions or petitions, Shine a Light focuses on raising awareness and provoking reflection. It presents researched insights alongside poetic or metaphor-driven visuals, inviting viewers to question how exploitation is normalised and hidden in plain sight. uniE608 Whakitipu i tō reo (Grow your language)
My Contribution My main role in this project was creating the 3D modelling and animated elements for the app as well as producing the explainer video. I worked on the 3D phone and app UI animations and brought the visual language of the Pua flowers to life. Evolving the Kupu Experience Kupu has already made a strong impact on the revitalisation of te reo Māori in Aotearoa by using AI to bring language learning into everyday moments. Spark invited us to imagine the future of Kupu while staying true to its kaupapa. Our team created Tipu, a gamified learning feature that empowers users to whakatipu i tō reo or grow your language. Designing the 3D Pua System Users nurture their own 3D Pua which draw inspiration from kōwhaiwhai and whakairo forms. Each Pua carries koru, koiri, ngutu kura, and mangopare elements that create a personal connection to growth. These flowers appear on a shared map to encourage collective progress and friendly competition. With Tipu Teams, users can also form groups with whānau and friends to strengthen motivation through shared learning. Identity Rooted in Te Ao Māori The design identity is rooted in te ao Māori. A custom typeface uses repeating line forms seen in whakairo panels to tell stories and uplift the language. Refreshed icons follow the same system to tie the visual language together. Collaboration and Cultural Guidance This project was shaped by collaboration with Spark and educators and guided by tikanga, kawa, and mātauranga Māori. Through ako we shared knowledge, built trust, refined ideas, and aligned outcomes with cultural values. Vision for Kupu 3.0 Kupu 3.0 is imagined as a tūī soaring across Aotearoa, scattering the seeds of te reo and inspiring rangatahi to embrace the language in their everyday lives. animator explainervideo video advert I worked alongside Jules Castillon, Eilish Neal, Scarlett Kang and Jayme Ducommun for this project.
